Following your bariatric diet and making sure you're getting enough protein and other essential nutrients may sound hard at first. But it really isn't. With these simple recipes, you can make tasty, nutritious meals, snacks, desserts, and beverages in minutes that are bariatric-friendly and packed full of protein.

Try these recipe ideas to get started. And don't forget to experiment with fresh fruits, veggies, and spices as you go.

Meals

High Protein Mashed Potatoes

Protein: 2 grams per 1 oz-serving

Ingredients:
  • 1 Tbsp + 1 tsp potato flakes
  • 2 Tbsp skim milk
  • 1 tsp Beneprotein® powder
  • 1 pat butter or 1 tsp sour cream
Directions:

1. In a 1-cup size microwave-safe cup, microwave milk for 25 seconds on high.
2. Stir in remaining ingredients.
3. Whisk rapidly until smooth.
 

Tuna or Salmon Salad

Protein: 7 grams

Ingredients:
  • ¼ cup tuna or salmon salad
  • 1 Tbsp light mayonnaise or light salad dressing
  • Diced onion, lemon, dill or cumin to taste
Directions:

1. Combine ingredients.
2. Blend until smooth puree consistency using a blender or food processor.
 

Egg Salad

Protein: 7 grams

Ingredients:
  • 1 egg, hard boiled
  • 1 Tbsp light mayonnaise or light salad dressing
  • Mustard, cumin, black pepper to taste
Directions:

1. Combine ingredients.
2. Blend until smooth puree consistency using a blender or food processor.
 

High Protein Tomato Soup

Protein: 12 grams per 6-oz serving

Ingredients:
  • 6 oz skim milk
  • 1 packet tomato soup mix
  • 1 scoop Beneprotein® powder
Directions:

1. Microwave skim milk on high for 80 seconds.
2. Whisk in remaining ingredients until blended.
3. Microwave again for 10-20 seconds on high. Whisk until smooth.
 

High Protein Cream of Wheat

Protein: 2.5 grams per 1-oz serving

Ingredients:
  • 5 tsp skim milk
  • 1 tsp Cream of Wheat cereal
  • 1 tsp Beneprotein® powder
Directions:

1. In a 1-cup size microwave-safe cup, whisk dry ingredients into milk until blended.
2. Microwave for 20 seconds on high.
3. Whisk until smooth.
 

Fortified Instant Breakfast

Protein: 24 grams

Ingredients:
  • 8 oz skim milk
  • 1 packet sugar-free Carnation® Instant Breakfast®
  • 4 Tbsp non-fat milk powder
Directions:

1. Blend well and chill.
 

Instant Breakfast

Protein: 12 grams

Ingredients:
  • 8 oz skim milk
  • 2. 1 packet sugar-free Carnation® Instant Breakfast®
Directions:

1. Blend well and chill.
 


Beverages and Shakes

Pina Colada Punch

Protein: 4 grams per 6 oz (yield 2 6-oz servings)

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup unsweetened pineapple juice
  • 1-½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp coconut extract
  • 1 Tbsp artificial sweetener
  • ½ cup skim milk
  • ½ cup non-fat milk powder
Directions:

1. Blend well and chill.
 

Hot Cocoa

Protein: 22 grams

Ingredients:
  • 6 oz skim milk
  • 1 packet sugar-free hot cocoa mix
  • 1 packet sugar-free Carnation® Instant Breakfast® (vanilla or chocolate)
  • 4 Tbsp non-fat milk powder
Directions:

1. Blend well.
2. Heat to desired temperature.
 

Mocha Shake

Protein: 24 grams

Ingredients:
  • 8 oz skim milk
  • 1 packet chocolate sugar-free Carnation® Instant Breakfast®
  • ½ tsp instant coffee powder
  • 4 Tbsp non-fat milk powder
  • Dash of cinnamon
Directions:

1. Blend well and chill.
 

Chocolate Peanut Butter Shake

Protein: 28 grams

Ingredients:
  • 8 oz skim milk
  • 1 packet chocolate sugar-free Carnation® Instant Breakfast®
  • 1 Tbsp creamy peanut butter
  • 4 Tbsp non-fat milk powder
Directions:

1. Blend well and chill.
 

Fast Fruit Shake

Protein: 24 grams

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup skim milk
  • 1 packet vanilla sugar-free Carnation® Instant Breakfast®
  • 4 Tbsp non-fat milk powder
  • ½ cup unsweetened fresh, frozen or canned fruit (peaches, applesauce, banana, berries, pears)
Directions:

1. Blend well and chill.
 

Yogurt Shake

Protein: 18 grams

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup artificially sweetened yogurt
  • ½ cup skim milk
  • 2 Tbsp non-fat milk powder
Directions:

1. Blend well and chill.
 

Eggnog Variation

Protein:  29 grams

Ingredients:
  • High Protein Eggnog
  • 1 packet vanilla, chocolate or strawberry sugar-free Carnation® Instant Breakfast®
Directions:

1. Blend well and chill.
 

Double-strength milk

Protein: 20 grams

Ingredients:
  • 4 Tbsp non-fat milk powder
  • 8 oz skim milk
Directions:

1. Blend well and chill.
2. Use as a beverage or in any recipe that calls for milk.
 

High Protein Eggnog

Protein: 25 grams

Ingredients:
  • ¾ cup skim milk
  • ¼ cup liquid egg whites
  • ½ tsp vanilla
  • 4 Tbsp non-fat milk powder
  • 1 tsp artificial sweetener
  • Nutmeg to taste
Directions:

1. Combine in a blender and chill.
 


Snacks and Desserts

Custard

Protein: 10 grams

Ingredients:
  • ¼ cup egg substitute
  • ¼ cup skim milk
  • Nutmeg
  • Cinnamon
  • Artificial sweetener to taste
Directions:

1. Mix all ingredients with a whisk.
2. Microwave on medium high for 1 minute.
 

Juice Pops

Protein: 18 grams total (1.5 grams per pop)

Ingredients:
  • 6 oz 100% fruit juice
  • 6 oz Water
  • 3 scoops Beneprotein® powder
Directions:

1. Combine juice, water and protein powder.
2. Pour into ice cube trays.
3. Insert tooth pick or popsicle stick into each cube and freeze.
 

High Protein Gelatin

Protein: 4 grams per 1/2 (yield s 4 1/2-cup servings)

Ingredients:
  • 5 Tbsp non-fat milk powder
  • 1 small box artificially sweetened gelatin (any flavor)
Directions:

1. Prepare gelatin per package.
2. Add milk powder.
3. Chill.
 

Orange Julius

Protein: 27 grams

Ingredients:
  • ½ cup unsweetened orange juice
  • ½ cup skim milk
  • ½ cup artificially sweetened vanilla yogurt
  • ¼ cup liquid egg whites
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 4 Tbsp non-fat milk powder
Directions:

1. Blend well and chill.
 

Supreme Pudding

Protein: 11 grams per 1/2 cup (yields 4 1/2-cup servings)

Ingredients:
  • 1 (3.4 oz) package artificially sweetened instant pudding (vanilla or chocolate)
  • 2 cups skim milk
  • 1 packet sugar-free Carnation® Instant Breakfast® (vanilla, chocolate or strawberry)
  • 8 Tbsp non-fat milk powder
Directions:

1. Blend well and chill.
